I just remembered this random story from high school. It was career day. Various local companies sent reps to talk to us about opportunities in furniture sales and the like. The ambulance chasing town defense attorney talked about how much he liked looking at female cadavers. 1/?
Anyway, a modeling agency from Rhode Island came. I've never been a particularly attractive person, but in high school I was a special kind of doof. Pale skin, huge forehead, buzzcut. Just a real non-looker. So I decided to sign up for one of their tryouts as a joke.
I brought my very supportive bff Dave (he doesn't do twitter) likely with the promise of a trip to Wes' Rib House. We arrived to the strip mall near the airport where the agency's offices were and there were about 30 people there, all taking this very seriously, unlike me.
They looked each of us over. I don't remember what I was wearing, but I assure you I didn't get dressed up for the occasion. This was solely to entertain myself and see what teenagers and their parents (I had already turned 18) would show up. I remember vividly the runway walk.
The runway walk was my moment to shine. In middle school, I tried out for a musical by clapping my hands and singing a made-up gospel song, to watch the reaction I would get from the casting people (I got a part). I walked the runway with such intentional awkwardness.
Nobody thought I was taking this seriously. I wasn't. I really just wanted to make people laugh. Dave and I left, got dinner, probably got Krispy Kreme because that was still a cool thing to do because they hadn't gone super mainstream yet.
A week later, I got a callback from the agency saying they wanted to take me on as a client. I laughed when they said this and assured that I had no interest in a career in modeling. But as I sit here now, 18 years later, I wonder how different my life would have been.
(It wouldn't have been different at all). FIN.
