There is still a perception among many that Americans don’t wear masks like the rest of the world. This just isn’t true. YouGov has done a tracker of COVID-related behaviors around the world since March, including mask wearing.
In March and April, mask wearing in the US was quite low, but it spiked in May and has been among the highest mask wearing countries since.

The most recent tracker showed 81% of Americans wear masks in public. The only countries in the Americas and Europe with higher levels are Canada (84%) and France (83%), Italy (89%) and Spain (89%). But those last 3 have also been hardest hit by the virus recently.
The lowest mask wearing is found in Scandinavia. Sweden (9%), Norway (24%), Denmark (40%) and Finland (46%). Although the tracker hasn’t updated these since October, so rates might have risen since. Still, they’ve been consistently far lower throughout the pandemic.
The UK was also traditionally quite low, but increased by Sept and is currently at 74%. Germany has remained steady around 64%. Most of the Asian countries have been consistently high mask wearers, between 80-90%.
The reality is mask wearing in the US is in line with or higher than most countries. And much of the world, particularly Europe, has also seen their highest confirmed cases in the past week or so. This despite far higher mask use compared to March & April
