tw sw negativity, the “rey has to spend her life alone on a desert planet” thing is exaggerated in some arguments, yeah, but what that argument is at its core is an issue with how rey’s ending was framed. final scenes, their symbolic significance and what they stand for, matter
and the last scene in tros, the scene that’s meant to be the final note in rey’s trilogy and her hero story, is her standing in a desert, with a robot and ghosts for company, in a specific place that the movies never established as being significant to her
it’s visually very similar to how she started out on jakku and tros’ preceding arc is poorly-written enough that it doesn’t make this ending scene make sense for her character *without* headcanons like “oh leia totally told her about tatooine offscreen” or “something about shmi”
so people pointing out the bleakness of this scene wrt rey’s character, how it’s weird and not that fit to her arc if rey, who only stayed on jakku with the futile hope that her dead parents would come back for her, has her last scene in her trilogy in a desert, with that context
and apparently, lf was insecure enough about how that final scene would be perceived that they added a line in tros’ visual dictionary about how rey’s always been more comfortable in deserts, which was in that reference book even before tros was released and the backlash happened
lf and the people that work for it can’t have it both ways. they can’t act like this ip is profound and mythic and bring up quotes about coming-of-age and heroism all the time *and* act like anyone who reads meaning into their work critically beyond the surface is delusional
