A suggestion is circulating to indicate a course’s rigor by placing the average course grade beside a S’s grade. This is NOT an indicator of rigor. Setting the bar high is rigor, but getting everyone there is good teaching. #sblchat #tg2chat #masterychat @ELmagazine
#Average grade in a class is NOT an indicator of rigor alone, but rather rigor (maybe) plus quality of teaching and assessment practices.
Even if the grades were based purely on learning, everyone’s getting a high grade doesn’t necessarily mean the course was easy.

It could simply mean the teacher was awesome and relentless at teaching and reassessing until everyone got there. Don’t punish excellent teaching by suggesting that the course grades are an indicator of rigor. This simply disincentivizes mastery-based teaching.
