I see we're doing 'Remain killed Labour' again.

My strongly Leave seat elected a Tory for the first time ever.

But it wasn't because of Brexit.

First:

My seat was 70% Leave, but on a 50% turn-out, so it's 35% Leave.

Next:
On the doorstep many people told us they weren't voting Labour and always had before.

100% of these said it was Corbyn.
Maybe 20% also mentioned Brexit, of whom half were annoyed Remainers.

Next:

The reasons for not voting Corbyn were striking. Bear in mind these are
Polling-day or shortly before urgent calls, so no time to engage. People told us that they were Labour but couldn't vote Corbyn because:

He wanted to abolish the Queen.
He wanted to abolish the army.
He was in the pay of Russia.
He wanted to sequester all private housing.
Do I need to stress that I know that these are lies? But Labour voters chose not to vote Labour (a quarter of the 2017 vote stayed at home) because of them.

And we couldn't shift this in minutes: longer engagement over years might have.

And finally:

A surge from the far-Right.
The ward next to mine has a 19% turn-out. It has had BNP and NF councillors. On the night we estimated that the expected turn-out trebled with huge piles of Tory votes (even with a Frottage Party candidate).

We know that neo-Nazi groups on social media ran a pro-Tory message.
You don't normally vote in these things, but this is a chance to vote for the kind of England we want to see.
I should stress that this was profoundly anti-Corbyn, and strongly pro-Boris.

In the end the Labour vote fell, the Tory vote was boosted,
The Brexit Party vote was tiny, Green and Liberal went up, probably from Labour, but not enough to make the difference.

Every seat is different, every voter has different views, but please don't make the glib mistake of assuming that a loss in a Leave seat was anti-Remain.
I am certain that, in my seat, any other Labour leader would have seen us hold the seat.

I voted for Corbyn twice and I don't need to be told of his faults. I wish he'd stepped down after '17.

We could have had passionate Remain and got a similar result, by the way.
