OK Comics is in Thornton's Arcade. It's a glass covered Victorian shopping street, and a haven for small independent businesses. Quite a few of our neighbours have had to permanently close this year.
Times are really tough on the high street, particularly for small independents. The landscape of our city centres is changing.
We quite often hear "Things will get back to normal" or "Mail order will keep you going", but for a lot of us, it's going to be a huge struggle. Don't expect your favourite shop to just automatically still be there after the lockdown.
Most independent businesses have an online order, and delivery option. If there's a shop you like, keep spending with them while they're unable to open.
One of the great benefits of spending your cash with local businesses is that your money stays in your community.
It doesn't disappear into an overseas back account. The people at the local business you support are much more likely to spend that money locally. The staff they employ will spend their money locally.
It keeps the cash you spend within your local economy.
As shop after shop closes, and our high streets decline, it's becoming more and more important to support the stores you like. If there's a small company that you enjoy the products or services of, make sure you spend a bit of cash with them as often as you can.
A shop you love may be closer to closure than you may think. Don't take your favourite shops for granted.
