great to have the @_Nano_Bubbles project underway, though we’re still waiting until 2021 for our formal launch. this project is the culmination of work i’ve been doing on nano for 20+ years now.
it also nicely builds on a project on the history of scientific fraud and research integrity that i've been working on w/ @WillemHalffman and Lissa Roberts
still, i sort of thought that the nano phase of my career was behind me and that i could now focus on my new project on oil, scarcity, and alternative energy in the long 1970s
so it’s worth asking whether there are convergences between these two seemingly very different topics. i think there at least 4:
first, oil firms were deeply involved in the inflation of earlier bubbles – particularly in biotech – that nanobiology is both genealogically and analogically related to
second, oil was as interested in the nano bubble as those earlier techs. eg, as i've discussed here, Rick Smalley was entangled with oil in several different ways

third, the issue of scientific communities’ difficulties in clearing errors from the scientific record and in discouraging the neglect of contradictory evidence has obvious links to oil companies’ roles in deliberately muddying the scientific record on climate science
finally, one of the aims of the oil project is to refine 😊 the Multi-Level Perspective framework. but in return, MLP – though usually applied to technology – might be helpful in understanding how erroneous claims defy correction in science.
the idea of a “niche” where ideas are protected from interference by a “regime” resonates with at least one sense of the metaphor of the “bubble” /end
