Does it ever all of a sudden strike you that what we are up against in Nebraska is honestly just a flagrant disregard for human life, coming from the same people who so loudly claim the opposite?
Where do you even start?
I mean seriously.
Things people need to live:
- Health
- Food
- Shelter
Things the Governor and his people have done:
(HEALTH) refused to listen to Drs., HCWs, experts and so have jeopardized people's health and well-being by
- not implementing a mask mandate & threatening those who try
- not shutting down the spaces and events that 💯 will spread COVID.
- attacking Drs. and experts thereby perpetuating dangerous conspiracies that continually endanger all of us and undo any progress made
-impeding any progress in the Legislature to get funding to people and communities who need it and take proactive steps to address COVID, thereby further eroding trust in our elected officials to protect us
- allowing the EO allowing virtual participation in legislative bodies to lapse so that citizen engagement in the legislative process, now more crucial than ever, is actually life-threatening.
(FOOD):
- even before COVID! Sent his Dept heads and cronies and paid-for legislators to fight expanding income eligibility for SNAP so that thousands of Nebraskans were ALREADY living, if not fully in, the certainly on the edge of hunger
- when the Federal government, run by a bunch of genuinely evil people, actually allowed emergency food aid under P-EBT, we had to fight him to implement it.
- Then! He let it lapse. Even though the Federal gov't said - No, here's money to make sure kids have food! Pete said no.
- The emergency food infrastructure was strained before COVID. Pantries are running out of food. This week, one Omaha food pantry blew past 120,000 people served since March 16 - tripling their total traffic from 2019. And the cavalry isn't coming.
(SHELTER): oh where to even START on this one.
- when the Governor finally signed a moratorium for non-payment evictions on March 25, it accomplished almost nothing because the burden of proof fell on the tenant and it was their responsibility to avail themselves of protection
- that EO lapsed on May 31 and evictions spiked to continue basically unabated since then because it is apparently critically important that we make people homeless for not being able to pay for their housing in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis
- and though every health dept and every health official is saying to stay home to stay safe, it is, apparently, Imperative that we take away people's homes.
- rental assistance programs are being run by organizations as efficiently as they can under unclear guidance from Treasury, but
There
Is
Not
Enough
Money
- Douglas County has $10 million in rental assistance that they can't spend because of arbitrary documentation requirements imposed by a national auditing firm hired by the Governor and the County to oversee community programs in communities they know nothing about.
- and now, just at the start of the holiday season, we are seeing an uptick in evictions being filed in Lancaster County
- Douglas County, due to health concerns, has shut down all in-person hearings EXCEPT FOR evictions
And what did all this talk about pro-life get ANY of us when we needed our elected officials to protect our lives the most?
- $20 of property tax relief.
- a ban on so-called dismemberment abortions.
The Governor does not care about you.
If your elected representatives aren't screaming for a mask mandate, aren't calling for expanded P-EBT, aren't calling for a stop to all non-payment evictions and foreclosures - then they do not care about you.
They don't care about your life.
And I don't know how we fight that.
FFS!
The FIRST question our elected representatives should be asking about anything right now is, "What is going to stop people from DYING" and proceeding from there. And this isn't happening.
How is this not happening.
