Neurotypical writers, read this thread.

Read it carefully.

And then imagine an autistic kid picking up this book (or too many books like this). https://twitter.com/emmaferrierx/status/1326583721756139527
Also, in case you're wondering:

This is not an exception to the rule.
(CW: ableism)

I can't help but think about a book I read two years ago. The MC talks about wanting to "rewire" her autistic brother's brain, wanting to shake him "the way you shook an Etch a Sketch, until the screen was clear."

It got a starred review.

It stuck with me.
It's far from the only one. We have award winning books like that. Bestsellers like that.

Listen to autistic people.

Be mindful of your readers.
And support #ActuallyAutistic authors.

Because I also can't help but think about reading @BooksandChokers's A KIND OF SPARK for the first time and crying my eyes out. That book means the world to me.

I can't wait for @Mike_Jung's next book. I treasure @corinneduyvis's work.
There are amazing authors out there doing amazing work. Support them. Lift up the good and the necessary as loudly as you call out the bad and the harmful.

This is a good thread to start: https://twitter.com/disabledmentors/status/1326465689448812544
(And with that, I'm going back to writing another #ActuallyAutistic main character for my next YA. See you on the flip side, Twitter.)
