Hello! If you're interested in publishing - keep reading. If not - keep scrolling.
My name's Fran and I'm marketing manager @reaktionbooks. I have nearly 10 years of experience in the publishing industry and have worked for both indies and Big 5. I'm not qualified in recruitment, but I've done enough of the application process to know a little bit!
If you're interested in getting INTO the industry, here are my top 5 tips ...
1. NETWORK. In a pandemic this is hard, but try to use Twitter & LinkedIn to your advantage. People in publishing are super friendly and are more than happy to speak to you. Join up with @SYP_UK, @bookcareers, @thebookseller too, as their insights into the industry are invaluable
2. CV. Make sure your CV is bang up to date. It doesn't have to have publishing experience necessarily, just plenty of transferrable skills to show off how brilliant you are. Hit up @AinChiara on Instagram right now for tips on what to include in a CV. Or ask me a bit more.
3. BRAND. What's your brand? What area do you want to get into? Position yourself as the ideal candidate for that area. If you're wanting to get into marketing, make sure you're on top of all the latest trends. Talk about it. Practice it. Join up with other marketers.
4. COVERING LETTER. One side of A4! This is your chance to tell a story, so tell it. Make it fascinating and un-putdownable. Tailor it to the company and job description. Check for spelling and grammar!
5. GOALS. What's your goal? Is it an indie or a Big 5? Be clear about what your goal is. Write it down. Be clear in interviews what you want to achieve - remember, you're interviewing them as much as they're interviewing you!
Have you got any questions about the industry or my own career path? Feel free to drop me a line!
