Thread: My #1 pet peeve in far right studies is when people talk about a global far right (or worse populism) when they are really only comparing the US and (normally western) Europe.
The global far right exists outside of these areas. Just because it doesn’t fit in with your image of the far right, doesn’t make it any less of a far right phenomenon.
A big reason for this discrepancy is the Eurocentrism of the academic field, which then influences how the media and public understand what is ‘far right’.
As a result, I often have to be up-to-date on far right activity in Western countries *and* my regional focus. Because I am expected to, whereas my colleagues in this field of study are not.
In response, myself, @Willallchorn & @AGoldok have founded a new @ManchesterUP book series ‘Global Studies of the Far Right’. We aim to showcase case studies outside of Western countries. And multidisciplinary approaches (not just political parties).
We hope the book series will help shift the conversation towards actually looking at the global far right, not just a transatlantic focus./end
