I’ve been thinking a bit lately about all those white people over the years who after one negative interaction with an Indigenous person on Twitter, no matter how minor, have exploded in rage vowing never to support anything Indigenous ever again or some such nonsense...

Too many white ppl in Australia want reconciliation without justice. They want Aboriginal ppl to like them, regardless of whether or not those people have their human rights. They want Aboriginal ppl to be grateful for their good intentions, regardless of their actual impacts.

If you believe in justice then you shouldn’t need me to like you to believe I am entitled to it. We shouldn’t need to be friends for me to be worthy of human rights. I shouldn’t need to be grateful for you doing the right thing in order for you to keep doing the right thing.

And Australia as a whole just keeps wanting to throw a racism is over party without earning one... walking across bridges, making apologies, Harmony Day lunches and Reconciliation morning teas, but zero fucks for Indigenous rights or to the elimination of racial discrimination.
