Following this keynote at #Europeana2020. Very interesting discussion in the chat regarding the use of the tribe metaphor, including tribe roles such as shamans, hunters, gatherers, chiefs. Some find this insensitive and representative of a colonialism discourse

... other think it's a perfectly okay metaphor and that it celebrates diversity (?!). There is also lack of acknowledging organisations acting within a capitalism discourse, while tribes are not. Images depict BIPOCs in tribal settings while whites are in office settings

& the answers coming in from around Europe are frankly worrying. Some eliminate the issue to a linguistic one, saying not using the word "tribe" eliminates the historical issues around this, other find tribes "interesting as structures", others don't find it an issue at all.

A remarkable note: I find the discussion VERY SIMILAR to discussing the existence of Zwarte Piet ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zwarte_Piet) with Dutch people. Something that to most other people is very racist is defended to the last breath by people who are normally fairly reasonable.
Okay apparently I need to continue this thread because now the only BIPOC in the panel has to explain how "words matter" and that digital imperialism is an issue, especially consider Europe's heritage and role in colonialism. WHY do THEY have to raise this point in the panel?
We as white people have a really big job to do here - WE need to ask these questions, WE need to stop feel good by listening to BIPOCs explaining issues and suggest "dialogue" as an option. WE need to START ACTING anti-racist all the time. It's unreasonable to assume (1/2)
and expect all BIPOCs to be learned within colonialism discourse, history, and potential issues relating to this - and then explain it to us. Like, WE have libraries (partly built on stolen cultural heritage, btw) - go read a bloody book! (2/2)
Okay, so now the keynote speakers discusses how kinship and groups are built in societies and therefore tribes and tribal ways are good ways to explain how "all homo sapiens" act. Here's some examples of words to use instead: community, family. I'm sure other ex's are available.
This is me table flipping at white stupidity. Sorry not sorry.
