The #CEDAW general recommendation on trafficking in women & girls in the context of global migration was published on 11 November 2020. We are very disheartened to note the regression of the Committee's own position on trafficking in this general recommendation.
Despite strong civil society engagement from affected communities & folks from the global south, the #CEDAW general recommendation on trafficking uses the racist & archaic 1949 Trafficking Convention to connect trafficking & sexual exploitation.
The #CEDAW recommendation's legal inconsistencies such as using 'exploitation of prostitution' & 'sexual exploitation' interchangeably, as well as erroneous references to the notion of 'demand' that goes beyond the Palermo Protocol's framing, risk stigmatising sex workers.
The recommendation to prosecute 'those on the demand side' also means that the #CEDAW document on trafficking stigmatises & marginalises sex workers & potentially impedes the global fight against trafficking.
