Over a period of time, voters (Remain and Leave) heard too much questioning from across Labour (but mainly too many of its MPs the legitimacy of the 2016 referendum. The referendum was either based on 'lies', 'manipulation', or the 'voters had been fooled'. Sound familiar?
And by the time of the general election, issues about types of trade deal, which type of Brexit do people want, became just background noise. The real issue had become one of respect and trust for a democratic decision.
Perhaps the least credited people are those northern MPs from all wings of the party who were acutely aware of the damage non acceptance of Brexit was doing on the ground. Many lost their seats, due to ahistorical analysis of the potential of LibDem vote in cities.
