Hi @johndarvall thanks for your piece on care home visiting this wk. You kept saying ‘but hugging your parent is dangerous can’t you see’ I hope Caroline & Tracy helped you understand the issue fully- in case not, here are some sources of info for you. TY again for a grt piece 👍
First please look at #stilllockedaway to see some of the faces behind the human cost of over 8 months of isolation from family
Then please look at http://RightsForResidents.co.uk  this group has almost 4000 members and the petition over 180,000 signatures. 1000s of families understand the huge damage isolation is causing. Please educate yourself on this too it’s so important
Then please read this article by infection control experts “Infection prevention & control and compassionate care are not mutually exclusive. The restrictions or bans must be lifted... all infection prevention and control recommendations for paid carers can be applied to others” https://twitter.com/julesstorr/status/1326575602837676033
Relatives understand that this is a difficult issue and OF COURSE we don’t want our loved ones unnecessarily exposed to Covid - nobody loves them more than us. But people in care homes die of many causes not just Covid and 1000s have already have died feeling abandoned....
....and there are solutions, which campaigners have told govt already:
1) keyworker status and testing for a designated loved one (families are co-carers not just visitors)
2) provide indemnity solutions to care sector as they’re not covered for Covid
If you’re still in doubt look at some of the stories...it’s not just the elderly this affects but people of all ages in care. This lady can’t be with her terminally ill son. https://twitter.com/cretanruth/status/1322311437042262027
We can never eliminate all risk but there must be a balance with quality of life (often care home residents have little time left). Care staff get tested weekly (thank goodness for care staff by the way) & can rightly go about their daily lives outside of work....
...that is deemed acceptable risk. There is NO reason why including family members as part of the care team (this is what we are) & giving them testing like staff cannot be done - this alone could ease the cruelty of the situation today...
....and would mean 1000’s and 1000’s of care home residents could be freed from the place of fear, confusion & loss they currently find themselves in.

It is already too late for many who have died. There really is no excuse for our society not to address this.
