My friend's mum died yesterday from Corona. The nurses let her (a police detective) stay longer than the restrictions allowed, sitting with her a couple of hours a day forbthe last few days.
She was in her 70s. Anti vax'ers would say she was old anyway, but she would still be alive if it weren't for this disease, for a few more years at least. She had asthma, so co-morbidities they would say, but so do loads of people, its not something we die from now!
She is the fifth person we know to die from this, all parents of friends, because it hit old people harder. The fact that they are older doesn't make it any less bad for their families, who expected them to be alive for a good long time still.
Saying all of that, I don't think the current restrictions are necessary. I think the early advice; keep your distance and wash your hand regularly, was the best advice. It's just that people stopped doing it - especially the regular hand-washing part.
Now there's potentially a vaccine coming out though, you have to get it. Please get it. It will protect the elderly more than you, but please get it anyway.
The pubs and shops and events and sports are desperate for this to be over.
I argued on here with a person saying the vaccine was unsafe and would cause infertility. The testing they do on anything like that now is insanely strong - they wouldn't put out anything that could harm you and haven't done for several decades.
Vaccinate the elderly first, obviously, then those with co-morbidity factors, then start rolling it down the age groups and then by areas of population density.
So if you're young healthy and in Cornwall, you're last on the list.
Sorry this was a bit ranty. I'm quite upset for my friend, who has now lost her only remaining parent. I'm upset for my other friends who have lost parents.
I don't think lockdown was at all positive/necessary, but please don't argue over a vaccine that will be a silver bullet.
