I’m half way through a 2 week quarantine in Brisbane. It’s an interesting process that I fully support. But I haven’t read much about other people’s experience so I thought I’d share mine. I’ve got lots of time on my hands.

I can see how it would be tough going for some people. It’s only 14 days but you’re basically under house arrest. Everyone - is very nice but you’re detained. You’re not locked in but you’re not allowed out. Some people might find that difficult.

While everyone is different, I’ve found it important to organise my day. Get up, make my bed, clean my room, shower, fresh clothes etc. Set aside some time to work, read, listen to music, exercise etc. Little routines are important.

Human contact is important so make sure you call or FaceTime friends and family. Chat with the police who escort you to and from your room for breaks. They’re friendly and happy to chat. Little interactions make a difference to your day.

Take as many breaks as you can get. I’ve found walking is helpful not only for exercise but for my mental well being. 3 x 30 minute walking breaks each day will leave you feeling invigorated & help the time fly.

Eat well. The food provided by the hotel isn’t great but can be supplemented by getting deliveries. This makes a huge difference. Ask for a proper plate & knife & fork from the hotel so you don’t have to eat from take away containers provided.

Call on support if you need it. I’ve had 4 calls from QLD government & the Red Cross asking after my wellbeing. I’ve been impressed. Let them know if you’re doing it tough. They’re there to help.

I was tested on day 4 & was confined to my room (36 hours) until my negative result. That was challenging but I found I could still do 10k steps a day in my room. I’ll be tested again on day 10 and then be confined to my room for the final 4 days.

Finally, a good attitude helps. If you’ve got a genuine gripe raise it but also recognise these are exceptional circumstances & we’re all doing our bit to keep our communities safe. A positive attitude will help you get through in good shape.
