As the election results trickled in last week, it's undeniable that mathematics got it's moment in the sun. But there was an implicit narrative underlining all of that math...
First, I heard all 3 female-identifying primetime news anchors on MSNBC confess to Steve Kornacki a version of the 'im not a math person'' trope.
With few exceptions, the chart analysts presented as men. All of the visible mathematics that inundated our screens was being done by men.
Furthermore, mathematics was being used by men not only to inform but also to entertain (like when Steve Kornacki just about broke the internet when he did some basic subtraction on his phone).
So here's my point: yes, mathematics was front and center while the votes were being counted, and yes that's nice. But there is also an underlying narrative which conveyed the nature of mathematics and who mathematics is for.
