Vincent Van Gogh took a lot of inspiration and influence from Japanese art,. He wrote about Hokusai's Great Wave[s] "were like claws, the boat is caught in them, you can feel it" (1888, Letter 676 to Theo).

There's rumors of connections to Starry Night and The Great Wave.
He often praised Japanese artists for their color work, continuing on in another letter to Theo in June 1888, "After some time your vision changes, you see with a more Japanese eye, you feel color differently."
Van Gogh had collected hundreds of Japanese woodblock paintings to decorate his walls with. He wrote that they helped his studio feel more "tolerable," (Letter to Theo, November 1885).

In another letter, he wrote that all of "his art is based to some extent on Japanese art."
He later traveled to the South of France, a place he claimed was as close to Japan as he could get. He traveled in hopes of capturing color like they did.

He was said to have brought some prints to on the train to compare landscapes and see "if it was like Japan yet."
