Because fascism is seeded in our subcultures so that it can grow covertly before it attempts to tackle the mainstream. And all it takes is one established artist or creator to introduce a bigot into the community. To provide them a foothold. The same now avowed white nationalists jumped from science fiction (Sad Puppies) to video games (Gamergate) to comics (Comicsgate), picking up a few new figureheads along the way, but adhering to the same playbook and targeting black and trans individuals each and every time.
The sad thing is that there was (and is) enough money in prose publishing and video games to weather fascist attacks. Comics? Likely--but the direct market and the serial floppy is another story.
Anyway, I bring this up because we--as a community--have to get better at identifying fascism and the recruitment methods of hate groups. Show them the door BEFORE they've dug their claws into a famous YA author, or TV actress on a genre show.
I don't know what will happen with comics. Games were able to bounce back because agitators were mainly outside agents who didn't have the money or skill to create AAA games. In comics they were artists and writers and editors and publishers. Some still working in the mainstream.
