The era since 1992 has been, by far, the longest period in American history in which the two dominant parties have been nearly evenly matched and regularly traded control of the presidency and of each house of Congress.
That seems like it should be healthy.

It ought to be a time in which fair governing norms are particularly sustainable, because everyone in power knows they might lose it again.
It ought to be a time in which functional rules for divided government take hold.
It... hasn’t been any of those things.
Two impeachments in that era barely scratches the surface of how much it has not been any of those things.
