This breaks my heart and makes me mad as hell. We are failing as a Commonwealth as long as we continue to fail our children. Segregation of any kind is wrong, but especially by race and poverty! https://www.nbc12.com/2020/11/11/report-school-segregation-by-race-poverty-deepening-virginia/
Just last month it was reported that the Virginia Department of Education @VDOE_News had zero people of color in leadership with decision-making authority. It’s very difficult to imagine the two aren’t intrinsically linked. https://www.wric.com/news/taking-action/senior-leaders-at-the-virginia-department-of-education-are-all-white/
I listen year after year to leaders attest their belief that your zip code shouldn’t determine the type of education you receive, but these two reports reveal that in the Commonwealth that’s exactly what’s happening.
Each year I join in the #RedforEd rally cry with educators and advocates to push to #fundourschools but it’s clear we can’t just fight to fund a system that is furthering inequities that will likely impact an entire generation of students.
I challenge every ed advocate to broaden their focus beyond just funding and to work with me to eliminate this perpetual cycle of segregation within our school systems. @Red4EdVA @VEAFund @vakids @TCIFiscal @LegalAidJustice @NewVAMajority
