Many of you have been asking me about the future of Artsakh’s indigenous Armenian monuments. Here is a likely scenario of what will happen to them. 1/4
Azerbaijan will renovate Shushi’s 19th c Holy Savior Cathedral that it bombed on October 8. The cathedral’s relatively young age fits “Armenians are settlers” narrative. This will be presented as proof of Azerbaijani tolerance. Same thing happened with Baku’s 19th c. church. 2/4
Azerbaijan will preserve — for now — major sites like Dadivank (Khutavanq) by proclaiming them “Caucasian Albanian” (a ridiculous 1960s theory) & by polishing out Armenian letters. This will be hard at Dadivank, as there are 100+ inscriptions, but they will find a way 3/4
Azerbaijan will erase 1000s of medieval cross-stones plus several dozen lesser known churches, especially in Hadrut area.
In summary, lots of erasure but not 100% wipeout — at least not right away — like they did in Nakhichevan in 1997-2006. 4/4
