what is going on in Perú right now? A THREAD #Perú #PerúSinPresidente
let's start with the 2016 presidential elections. Pedro Pablo Kuczynski was elected president by a small percentage. HOWEVER, the vast majority of congresspeople were from ‘opposition parties’, meaning they were not part of the new president's party.
his term would go to become one of the shortest terms ever in the history of Republican Perú, since on March 21 2018 he resigned. this was after news broke out that part of his team was 'buying votes' from politicians so he would NOT be impeached.
let me add that this impeached was the 2ND held in during his term. he survived the first one, allegedly because he accepted (before the impeachment vote) that he would PARDON Alberto Fujimori. now, who's Alberto Fujimori?
Alberto Fujimori is a former president, father of Keiko Fujimori (on the right) who, guess what? lost the 2016 election to Pedro Pablo. PLUS, the majority of congresspeople were part of Keiko's party 'Fuerza Popular'
ever since PPK won there was an interest conflict. it is TRUE however that Pedro was involved in illegal matters. but the point is that the congress (specially from Fuerza Popular) used that as a tool to make the then-president meet their desires (one of them being the pardon)
let's go back to March 2018. on the 23rd, his resignment was accepted by the congress.
the then-vicepresident, now president, Martin Vizcarra assumed the presidency.
before that, he was (and is until today) involved in a 'corruption scandal', back when he was head of the ministry of transport and communications. it is alleged there was an embezzlement in the process of planning a future international airport in Chinchero, Cuzco
but that is besides the point (he is likely not innocent tho)
his term from March 2018 would be terminated when the peruvian congress, on November 9 2020, impeached and removed Martin Vizcarra from office. let me add that this was the 2ND impeachment for him, that is the 4TH overall since 2016.
now, this is where y'all non-peruvians are at now.
when Pedro Pablo (remember the gray-haired man who won the elections?) resigned, Martin (First Vice-President) was meant to assume. here we have two vice-presidents, now who's missing? Mercedes Aráoz, the Second Vice-President.
you may the thinking the she would assume now that Vizcarra is out of the picture, right? nah. she resigned.
why? because when Vizcarra dissolved the Congress (a capacity of the president) on September 2019, the congress as a last resource tried to suspend Vizcarra and decided to name Aráoz as Acting President (however, they couldn't since they were not part of the congress anymore).
Araoz happily accepted, thus betraying her original political party and actively being part of unethical decisions. as i said, since such congress didn't exist anymore, Vizcarra was not suspended and Aráoz never became the legitimate president.
due to the backlash from basically everyone, she decided to resign to the "presidency" (something she never had to begin with) and her position as 2nd vicepresident as well. elections for the new congress were called on January 2020.
let's recap: up to that point, the majority of the congress were playing against everyone whose ideas were not of their liking. they opposed to basically everything Pedro Pablo & Vizcarra said/did, and had little to no remorse in doing the most to get rid of those two (as we saw)
back to november 9 2020. no 2nd vicepresident. Vizcarra was removed. what was left?
the president of the congress was meant to assume, and that is when shit went down
because my country is full of idiots, the new elected congress was little to no different from the old one. same people, same ideas, same level of opposition and lack of collaboration with the president. the new faces were even worse.
the position of president of the congress belonged to Manuel Merino de Lama
on November 10, he assumed the presidency.
this is the issue: right now, Perú can't NOT have a president. right now, there's no one controlling the congress since they have 'immunity' (meaning they can't be investigated for illegal matters). the now president and the congress are now acting as one.
whatever the congress dictactes will face 0 opposition from the president, since he is part of them basically. elections were meant to be called on April 2021 and until that point, the congress will (and already is) doing whatever they desire with peruvian laws.
but the lack of control is just 1 issue. did I mention that, out of 130, 68 CONGRESSPEOPLE WERE BEING INVESTIGATED? yes, embezzelment, corruption, fraud, long etc. (i said my people were idiots, didn't I?) however as long as they're part of the congress they can't be investigated
did I also mention that the now president Merino, is also involved in crimes? HIS OWN FAMILY received contracts from the state (nepotism anyone?) the value of those contracts go up to 200 k peruvian soles
did i also, also mention that he failed to finish BOTH of his majors back in college? now, to be a president in Perú you don't even need college, you barely need high school apparently!
for all those reasons (and the fact that the congress impeached the president in a suspicious manner, right when we are going through a pandemic AND economical crisis that is worsening every day) the peruvian population is trending #MerinoNoEresMiPresidente #MerinoNoNosRepresenta
Peru is going through their worst sanitary, economical and political crisis in its 199 YEARS OF REPUBLICAN history and the congress decided to use their immunity to hijack the presidency for the sake of their own interests, they are now NOT being watched. #MerinoNoEsMiPresidente
