Fellow social workers who are bilingual. Do not agree to translate if this isn't a part of your job requirement. Your company likely already contracts with a contractor for translation services and you have a license to protect. 
Last school year I became implicated in a discrimination complain due to translating a conversation between a parent of our students and one of our principals.
This is a case that I was following closely as the student was on my caseload. However, the parent did not agree with the change of placement that the principal decided to move forward with. I conveyed the message in the parents' language.
Whether or not I agreed was irrelevant. It came out of my mouth and I was subjected to an investigation for a 504 plan violation.
Ultimately I was cleared of any wrongdoing, but I learned a very important lesson. I am bilingual, but I am not working in the capacity of a translator. I am a therapist first and foremost. My license is my livelihood. My allegiance is to my students.
