A thread, as I’ve seen many conversations on social media and traditional media regarding the electoral college. The electoral college was not created to protect uninformed farmers or to protect rural voters. It was created to protect slave owning southern states. 1/
At the time the electoral college was created, northern and southern states had about the same population, but about 1/3 of the population in the south were slaves meaning the southern states would have fewer voters in a popular vote. 2/
The electoral college allowed for an indirect vote based on state population and leveraged the three-fifths compromise (3 out of every 5 slaves were counted as a person) to determine the southern state’s electoral college value based on population. 3/
As many Americans are taught (myself included) the electoral college was designed to protect farmers, I ask do we want to maintain a system designed to protect, yes farmers, but let’s be honest, a system designed to protect SLAVE OWNING farmers? 4/
