Was great to show folks how @aboutbloomfield's news harvests work with the @CenterCoopMedia today. Couldn't make it? Here's what you missed!
Local news has a last mile problem. It's something that occurs in supply chains where service delivery becomes too inefficient (for some), leading to reductions in quality and access.
Broadband, food, banking, and news are examples of public goods with last mile problems. Here's how one community member described it in 2019.
So what did we do? We centered existing community production and developed a new workflow to begin addressing information inequity in Bloomfield.

Here's what that looks like today.
Basically, we identify civic news and info sources (currently tracking about 200), then we pay attention to what gets shared or published there in order to bring that information directly to people via a newsletter. And we're adding new channels and news products as we go along.
And here are some of the functions we're automating using Zapier. One news item in Google Sheets gets...

📌published as a WordPress post
🖥️added to a web version of our newsletter
✉️added to a MailChimp newsletter
🐦published as a tweet
🖼️published as an Instagram post
We're continuing to iterate on distribution and want to build on top of this workflow. Our roadmap🤞:

1) Non-English language versions of our news products

2) Building email and SMS feedback loops

3) Launch community reporter programs

4) Put community in the editorial seat
I'm excited about this journey to imagine a future where local news enables deeply connected, inclusive communities.
