imagine getting this text out of the blue

For folks asking, particularly Black folks, I find the best way to move the needle with family is first getting a goood grounding on what their political/personal priorities are.
Iâm a 20 year old college student, I donât have much authority in my fam, but Iâm first gen so my fam are sometimes willing to listen bc they view me as the âpolitical/college educated kidâ in the fam.
For my grandma, sheâs from the south, super religious (christian), and has worked for my grandfathers carpet business almost her whole working life. So Whereâs my in? Sheâs a Black woman, christian, renter, self-taught artist/writer.
She thought her identities/interests were in contradiction with communism bc public ed propaganda and her mother convinced her that communism was primarily a religious matter, her most fundamental bedrock.
By debunking this, and moving forward by showing her how folks with her same interests also are in the fight against capitalism, she saw herself possibly fitting in the fight. And I think thatâs what so many of our folks fear, lost of self. We just gotta make it personal.
I didnât pass her the communist manifesto but instead I introduced her to DG Kelley and Hammer and Hoe. I talked about sharecroppers and revolutionary Black folks resisting, moving towards unionizing. I put it in a context that she could visualize as a southern Black woman.
Follow me and Dm me your strategies for teaching ya fam and friends! We all gotta learn from somewhere.
