The decision to "lockdown" or not isn't economic. It's moral. Either way the economy will suffer, but thousands of dead can't be brought back. Funding for mental health and wellness is available, as is support for businesses and workers. It's political will that's lacking #ableg
Look at places like New Zealand and Victoria State in Australia. They chose to be aggressive and strive for zero infections. Now they're able to enjoy a much more "normal" life with Covid and aren't paying the same economic tolls others are.
In the short to mid term it's increasingly likely that an effective vaccine will be available, helping us to get back to some sense of normalcy.
Why then are conservative governments not taking it seriously - especially Jason Kenney's?

Because they've made it clear all along that they want to see more private health care. Not acting on Covid and leaving Albertans to exercise "personal responsibility" will strain our HC system to the breaking point, which will give them the narrative they want to privatize.
These Conservatives have never given two shits about mental health, suicide, or isolation. It's the same argument as nativist/nationalists who are against immigration that argue we should look after veterans/the homeless first. You'd be hard pressed to find any history of them
Caring at all.
The only people Kenney and co care about are their large corporate donors and supporters who stand to profit from the collapse of our systems. This isn't even capitalism, it's corporatism and it's broken.

A government's basic function should be to serve its people; all of them. And to protect human health and wellness.
Our government has chosen not to provide funding for schools for adequate PPE and mitigation - but is giving grants to religious groups for that?

Our government has refused to take reasonable measures to prevent exponential growth of cases, has not been transparent with information and has tried to paint the management of the pandemic as a choice between an open economy or full lockdown.
In the end, Kenney's inaction will result in more deaths, higher costs, and more draconian measures than if they'd actually tried anything more than they have so far. At the end of the day it will cause more economic destruction to small businesses and far more deaths
For no benefit other than to his large corporate pals who are eager to expand into medical and hospital care. It's amoral and an abdication of their responsibility. #ableg #cdnpoli #FiretheUCP
