To honor Audre Lorde, a pioneer for intersectional feminism and an advocate for racial equity in academia at Hunter College & abroad, Hunter faculty have proposed renaming Hunter West Building after her.
Renaming the West Building after Lorde, would honor her legacy and indicate a celebration of her values. It could spur a dedicated effort to uplifting all students and faculty of color at Hunter, whom she fought for:
"Racism will change at Hunter when we begin to recognize race, distortions around race, as a reality in consciousness and when we dare to examine the ways in which those distortions affect teaching, and imprint themselves upon our students" - Lorde, archives housed at Spelman
