THREAD: Yeah @AOC & @DougJones are right about this. I say this as a former President of the Young Democrats of America who in 2014 asked for Dem financial investment in youth vote programs and it didn’t happen. That was also the year we lost the Senate Majority.... (1/11) https://twitter.com/aoc/status/1326233680319303681
It's not a secret to anyone whose been involved in the Democratic Party for a decade or less that year round organizing went flat. Our messaging wasn't great, save for ACA. Meanwhile the GOP moved in sync w/partner orgs & their message was sharp even if morally awful (2/11)
About that GOP moving in sync w. partner orgs? If the RNC couldn't legally coordinate w/ groups, conservatives always found ways to direct donors & encourage support to groups doing the work. At any moment, GOP & its allies were organizing & microtargeting to local office (3/11)
Meanwhile, Dem leaders at the time were telling me (& my predecessors) why they can't legally coordinate w/us and/or can't figure out how to get us major funding. Really? In 2014, Millennials were a part of the coalition that voted for Obama, & you can't figure this out? (4/11)
I wouldn't even have been mad, if the youth vote was getting funded through the campaigns. At least it would've been getting done but it wasn't though. And the consequence of that & lacking communities of color turnout ops was that Dems lost the Senate Majority. (5/11)
I say this because I’m getting tired of denying the obvious because it’s AOC saying it, which is ridiculous. We won a major battle but not the war, and we need to be honest why that is, cause whole lives and the quality of those lives are on the line. (6/11)
GA is a success because of year round organizing and a demographics change. In Virginia we had success for similar reasons, our elections every year forced us to organize every year. The two counties Rep. Spanberger won have strong Dem & allied organizing, plus more PoC (7/11)
If u live where there is no demographics change, it doesn’t mean u still shouldn’t year round organize. If Dems re-invest in organizing & messaging in say Missouri or AL,they’ll have better results than they do now. But in absence of that, GOP has the mic & the ground game (8/11)
This is important because many star candidates who ran & won will be redistricted out of their seats. Dems don’t have enough state legs to stop this in some places. So find new voters organize them, and win over others as we can. This is not a message problem…(9/11)
If you don’t like the wording of a message, then Dems invest in year round organizing, comms, and infrastructure, not just blaming activists who are the only ones doing the messaging & organizing for their communities. Because not to put too fine a point on it but… (10/11)
those activists, their message, and organizing of communities of color/young people are why we had huge margins of victories in 2020 in major cities/areas in PA, WI, MI, AZ, and GA. 🤷🏾‍♀️. (11/11)
