Trump voters are no more evil than Biden voters are noble. They are normal humans, with good and bad traits, exercising their right to vote for their preferred vision of the country. The best way to heal, in my view, is to drop Manichaean narratives and to promote moderatism.
We live in a huge, diverse country. No single vision is right for us. We need to understand this and get our more idiosyncratic satisfactions from our local communities while accepting compromise at the national level, recognizing that crazy libs in Seattle won't kill rural Iowa.
And similarly that proud MAGA fans in West Virginia won't run roughshod over New York City. We have to let isolated stupidity remain isolated. It's a big country. You can always find an extremist idiot on the left or right to display as evidence of that tribe's malevolence.
And, most of all, both parties need to pushback against recklessness in their own ranks. Biden is a good moderate with an extreme leftist wing to manage. I hope he swats them down. And I hope the GOP rejects Trump's wild, illiberal, and anti-conservative behavior.
We all have to make sacrifices and allow for lifestyles and ideologies that we don't like. We're not going to "win" every time. But, at the end of the day, we are all Americans. Let us shame not each other but the extremists, the ones who divide and polarize for profit.
And then let us find more meaning and sustenance from our neighborhoods. Promote liberalism and procedural fairness and then recognize that our commitment to these values means that sometimes our side loses and sometimes it wins. And we should neither gloat nor riot.
Instead, we should be thankful that we were born in the greatest country in the world, free and affluent. We should be thankful to Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Eisenhower, King Jr. and all the ordinary men and women who made our liberty and prosperity possible 🙏
