In my career, I've had junior faculty express fear to me about speaking up bc of lacking tenure. I've encouraged speaking up before tenure: get tenure while being who you are. If you speak truth to power, any attempted retribution results in embarrassment. It also builds respect.
If you stay quiet now, you will do the same even after get tenure. You also find that most bad actors who have such power are bullies who are bluffing. Competent people don't have time to play these games. And when bullies act up, their enemies love to join in on the beat-down.
They know you fear them, so that's why they behave the way that the do. This won't stop until you assert yourself as a threat. Truth to power often doesn't win you friends, but it's a satisfying way to live.
So, for Republicans refusing to stand up to Trump for fear of retribution, it's time to step up. Trump has not only been a terrible President, he's an awful person. It shouldn't be a hard stand to make. If you go down, at least go down with some self-respect.
