It’s common for fans to have favorites at the club, but at every player should be criticized based on their performance, no matter how popular they are at the club. However, City fans don’t do that.
If popular players at club don’t perform well for example De Bruyne or Sterling, they receive no criticism, instead City fans scapegoat other players.
The most common scapegoats for City have been Gundogan, Mahrez, Zinchenko, and Stones. They use these players at scapegoats because of how lowkey they are and how they don’t really drag any attention.
For example, how much hate Mahrez has gotten this season. Even though he won City’s player of the month in September, he’s been getting a lot of stick from City fans. It’s like they forgot he was their second best player last season.
Now let’s turn it back to one of the favorites, I think most people remember last season when Sterling was going through a bad run of games. Most people noticed how bad he was, but he received no criticism instead City fans just washed it away and kept backing him. Is that fair?
Here’s another example, I think we all remember the penalty De Bruyne missed on the weekend right, for City fans they forgot about it and moved. But the same fans still criticize Mahrez for that penalty miss against Liverpool two years ago. Do you see where I’m going here.
Not just Mahrez, but Zinchenko received a lot of criticism for his mistake against Southampton last season. Fans were calling to sell him and drop him. On the day it wasn’t a good City performance, but instead Zinchenko was scapegoated for it.
Before Mahrez it was Gundogan, who I think is a good player and played well against Liverpool, but won’t receive any praise for it. City fans have scapegoated him for years.
