Listening to @graemem and @Lazybastid on Wait What? discussing whether Grant Morrison's nonbinary comments is "news" or not. Maybe what they're struggling with is how it was presented as a "coming out." IMO, "coming out" is a bad way to frame conversations about queer identities.
I've been queer my whole life and can't point to a single coming out moment. My understanding of my own sexual identity has constantly evolved over time, from childhood to adulthood to middle age, and it continues to evolve. How I present and express that identity also evolves.
Even if it I believed my identity was somehow fixed and I was able to fully articulate it with a specific label or description, I would still be forced to "come out" every time I meet a new person or start a new job or talk to a stranger on the internet about who I am.
For me, Grant Morrison talking about their sexual identity and aligning with specific labels that they haven't publicly claimed for themselves before, is "news" insofar as it's good for others who identify as nonbinary to see themselves represented in media.
Are some news outlets kinda milking it or presenting it in a slightly more dramatic light than it deserves? Probably. I would not go as far as to call it "voyeuristic" though. To me, it provides an interesting insight into a creator whose work has frequently tackled these themes.
As luck would have it, I'm in the middle of reading The Invisibles now, and I was having a lot of conflicting, somewhat awkward feelings about the portrayal of Fanny. Having Grant Morrison specifically address their own gender identity in this moment feels incredibly relevant.
The discourse around gender has changed so much since the 90s. Knowing that the person who created that character and wrote those stories has "updated" how they identify based on how the language has evolved over time makes me feel better about the whole thing.
It's hard to explain exactly why that matters. But I'm glad it happened and that people are talking about it.
At one point @graemem claims "I'm nonbinary" is a statement that means nothing to anyone reading Grant Morrison's Green Lantern. Maaaybe? But it definitely means something to a queer person reading The Invisibles in 2020, as I've just described.
Also I have to side with @Lazybastid when he says “history will prove me right and you very wrong” 😂
