I talked about the need for decent subtitles on YouTube recently, but this video makes the argument a hundred times better than I ever could:
Folks like @rikkipoynter have been campaigning for decent subtitling for a long time — see the #nomoreCRAPtions hashtag for examples. YouTube killing off the community captions system hasn't helped: I disagree with their call to do that, although I do understand why.
If you're not a subtitle user, you may never have considered any of this before. That's okay!

Plus, subtitles take a little time, or cost $1-2 per minute of video. Not everyone can afford them — even if they do help watch time. (15% of my viewers watch with subtitles turned on.)
But if you do know about subtitling, and you run a big channel that can afford the time or money, and the only reason your videos don't have subtitles is "eh, can't be bothered"… I think that's inconsiderate and rude. 🤷
If you make videos, and any of this has helped to convince you, then I've put links to YouTube's subtitle tools, and recommendations for subtitling services, in the description of my most recent video!
