I used to think he was way overrated, basically a mediocre general who was in the right place at the right time. but voluntarily turning down supreme power for life, turns out that is not so common
I also used to scoff at Madison and company for fretting so much about how you cultivate public virtue, deliberative processes, and so on. that concern seems a lot more warranted today lol

it is cheap and easy to say the founders were all slave owning monsters or people who countenanced such, not least because it's true. but that also leaves aside the question of why the country cohered and ultimately thrived
