Some thoughts on Arnab episode. Nothing I have not voiced before.
In any high profile case, it is generally a safe assumption that the players are rational. They understand the push and pull of powers better than what we like to think.
Who are the visible powers (or players)?

1. Arnab Goswami himself. Yes, I am reluctant to add him - but let it be ..
2. Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray.
3. Mumbai police led by NCP.
4. Legal team for Mumbai police under INC.
Am not adding BJP here because we are only talking of visible players. BJP isn't.

What is the apparent rational behind each player? We can safely add ego to all of the players as a common motivator. So - leave that aside.
Arnab: "speaking truth to power"
Shiv Sena: political heavy weight in this city
NCP: heavy weight in the state
INC: protect the family.

What are the weaknesses?
Arnab may be immune, but his driver, his water boy, his office boy's girlfriend / wife, his janitor are not.
Shiv Sena may rule the city with an iron fist, but people will chuck them out of power. Reduces power of UT over party. Local leaders will rule.

INC has the most weakness here. Their voters are largely urban, secular and liberal. Press freedom matters to them.
NCP are running the home Ministry. I doubt they have much to lose. What happens in Mumbai (Arnab) may not reach their core voters at all!

BJP will go hammer and tongs against INC in every major city -- in state and 2024 elections. And it will affect every party that is in alliance with INC.
The other possibility: UT helps Arnab Goswami destroy competition .. and Arnab shares the spoils (mitigates his weakness).

But then, everyone has their ego massaged too.
Arnab - because he is now the fighter for press freedom.
UT - because he has shown a loud mouth his place (I can harass you out of business)
INC - you name Maino, you go to jail.

Of course there are other players: the rest of media - just ego, no brains. When they could have played nice and become big on the shoulders of Arnab, they went churlish and destroyed themselves further.
And the ultimate winner: Supreme Court.
