I’m incredibly sad to see the new statue covered with an emblem of the anti-trans movement. Something that was created by the local community for their own community, has been vilified on social media, and is now being used to push an anti-trans agenda. https://metro.co.uk/2020/11/11/naked-mary-wollstonecraft-statue-covered-with-t-shirt-amid-backlash-13575519/
Nudity has a long and powerful place in feminist history as a political statement. Nudity in art anyway is absolutely great. Women’s bodies, in art and life and politics, are nothing to be ashamed of.
This piece was commissioned by women, created by a woman, for their local community. You don’t like it? Fine! Great! Go make your own! But the fucking awful pile on, and now this?
Awesome historical things I’ve learned in the last 24 hours that make me love #MaryWollstonecraft more and more: She supported the Chevalier d’Eon, an absolute icon of trans history.
