On this Veterans Day, here are some comic creators who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, Jerry Siegel, & Will Eisner.
Steve Ditko, Alex Toth, Wally Wood, & Irwin Hasen.
Jim Starlin, Larry Hama, John Romita, George Papp.
Mort Weisinger, Carl Burgos, Joe Orlando, & Johnny Craig.
Curt Swan, Kurt Schaffenberger, Ben Oda, & Ross Andru.
Al Plastino, Dick Ayers, Dick Dillin, & George Tuska.
Harvey Kurtzman, Joe Simon, Bill Parker, & Bert Christman, who was killed in action on January 1942.
In addition to creators, I should mention two founders of the American comics industry who served in the military. Major Malcolm Wheeler Nicholson, who founded the company that would become DC Comics, & Wilford Hamilton “Captain Billy” Fawcett, who founded Fawcett Publications.
