I understand looking at this map is disheartening if you’re from the states that leaned red. This is not me saying come together but this is me saying understand what type of places these are and who is in them. THREAD https://twitter.com/zayranduran/status/1325140338294448129
Imma go with Indiana because I live here. Half our state is the rust belt and half of our state is the Bible Belt. These are historically red leaning populations. Young voters know what they know from education, their parents, and their community. 2/
Generational poverty is rampant in Indiana. A lot of people don’t have access to technology, higher education, and a connection to the rest of the world. This means they get their news from one, maybe two community sources and the people around them 3/
Therefore, their perception of the world looks very different than someone with access to those resources.
On top of this, community is so so big in Indiana. This is small town USA and group think is a big thing. When you spend your whole life in one community 4/
You will think and vote just like your community. Young voters in these areas lean right because of this and fear of change tends to stop people in their tracks.
The people from these communities who don’t agree tend to Leave. Think about all the people you know 5/
From small towns who “had to get out.” They move to the city or even different states and allow their home community to remain stagnant and make changes in these new areas.
Advocacy work in small towns is truly the only way to change this. 6/
Supporting educational funding. Supporting changes that increase assistance for those below the poverty line. Helping your community understand all sides of issues, these all play a role in transforming these communities. We just have to do the work. 7/
These areas aren’t a wash. They need the help the most and are often forgotten or cast aside which only aides to people’s political views.
I’m not saying sympathize with the hateful people who live in these areas, but those people live everywhere. Help the people who don’t know.
