“Mia San Mia”

More than a motto; A way of living!

[THREAD]
Mia San Mia, three words synonymous with FCBayern, translated to ‘we are who we are’

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately, what exactly does it mean to have a Mia San Mia attitude, and what can it teach us to live by the message it sends?
“Mia San Mia” as a phrase, has its roots in the 19th century Austro-Hungarian Empire, and was later used by German politician Franz Josef Strauss. It was adopted by Bayern during the 1980’s

According to insiders, it was coined by several players into a song, in the 1987 campaign
Bayern would go on to lose 2-1 to Porto in Vienna, but the club gained something that would last just as long in the minds of many, a club motto.

The Mia San Mia dynasty, was born.
It allows fans to get up close and personal to their heroes, ask them questions, take a selfie.

“Mia San Mia” resonates deeply with its followers, it is more than a mere motto, it is a way of being. The Allianz arena, west stand, displays the motto in large letters.
It is not just a motto, it is a club philosophy that permeates the club at all levels, and transcends decades and generations.

🗣”Mia San Mia stands for the complete will to succeed” said Thomas Müller, a player brought up in the surroundings of this philosophy.
“Mia San Mia also stands for a hardcore winning mentality with a good dose of self belief, but without any arrogance”, continued Müller.

“After the restart, it was our ‘Mia San Mia’ attitude that pulled us through”, said Leon Goretzka after the 2020 CL final.
It is clearly a way of life for anyone who steps into the Bayern threshold. They must have this, almost Mia San Mia, gene. To never stop fighting, and always believe in who you are. If you do this, you will win more than you lose.

Outsiders will see it as arrogant. Not at all.
It is a motto that I feel we should all live by. Always striving to be the best you can be, and believing in your values and what you can do.

“Mia San Mia” has spawned 16 ‘golden rules’, which were published for the first time as part of Bayern’s 110 yr anniversary in 2010.
I will not post all 16, but here are a select few that I believe resonate to the club the best;

“Mia San tradition”- fairly self explanatory, but in my eyes, so important. A clubs tradition is who they are, and where they’re going. Amongst others, you see
Bayern’s opposition to the nazi regime in this. Always treating their players with respect, and being there for them.

“Mia San Selbstvertrauen”- We are self belief: Having high expectations and always aiming high, believing in your qualities and fearing no one.
A message that transcends the club, and something we should all strive to believe in.

“Mia San Vorbilder”- We are role models: Every player who comes into the club knows this. To be an ambassador for the club on and off the field, to contribute towards the image of the club
“Mia San Partner”- We are partners: This is a strong message for both players and fans alike. To know that we are in this together, and that win or lose we support each other no matter what
“Mia San Motor”- We are dynamic: This is hugely significant for life outside of football. Teaches us to never live in the past, to always try new things to succeed and remain at the top, but your core values should never be forgotten in achieving this.
“Mia San Famile”- We are family: This possibly could be the most important rule of all. We are all one family, we share a love of all things that Bayern stands for: It’s traditions, it’s ethics, it’s forward thinking mentality.

Once a Bavarian, always a Bavarian.
Franck Ribery, at the end of the 2018/19 season placed his hand on his heart, and signed off with “Mia San Mia” in his teary-eyed farewell speech.

For so many people, it is seen as an arrogant motto, believing it is Bayern’s way of keeping others in their place.
It’s quite the opposite. It is a way to bring people closer, through its core values and beliefs. Bavaria has its own dialect to other parts of Munich, but with this motto, everyone speaks the same language: Believe in the message it sends, and you will always succeed
