The glut of new newsletters and people leaving mainstream media for them isn’t yet turning into a boom in original reporting, so much of writing is derivative or opinion. Which has a place, but hope everyone understands why reporting is what matters, moving up the stack matters.
Reporting takes effort and patience, most of the newsletter economy yet doesn’t have time for that in an age that rewards churn short term, and burn will follow. One for the reporters...
It isn't either-or, or just newsletters, true for mainstream media too. Take it from someone who did go thru churn & burn of blogging AND reportage two decades ago (and even now), it is a beast you've to feed all the time.
