#CLST6 #RR20 Religious and cultural influence did not just move from Rome out into the countryside-- cults were also adopted in Rome. The Temple of Jupiter at Baalbeck in Lebanon is an example of religious syncretism [1]. /1 https://twitter.com/FlintCLST6/status/1326218504828280833
The local god, Baal, became connected with the Roman god-- Jupiter. The temple also reflects local architecture. In terms of Roman adoption of local cults, Mythreism was a large mystery religion which came from the East to Rome [2]. /2
Interestingly, Romans were allowed to belong to any cult as long as they also worshiped the imperial cult. Ptolemy's interest in Greek culture and adoption of Serapis is also an example of religious syncretism [3]. Religion unified Greece and Egypt. /3
The Romans became interested in Serapis through trade and replaced the supreme deity with ISIS [4]. This shows how Romans could alter cults to better fit their beliefs. /4
