If the answer is 'no', I don't think brilliant captains exist or ever have. A thread: https://twitter.com/mainlycricket/status/1326221970610941952
"Why are cricketers special?"

Because they do what we can't. They turn the ball, move the ball in the air or off the deck, bowl at 150 kph, bowl bouncers, yorkers; they are too skilled.

Batsmen tackle them and hit the ball for huge distances.

They are very very skilled.
Batting/bowling requires execution. So, you succeed and fail.

Captaincy? You have to just make the right calls. You need a working brain which understands cricket.

If you can't make even right selection calls after playing years of cricket, how can you be good?
Add to that, those errors can be spotted be cricket watchers who have never played cricket.

So, IMO, a good captain is someone who is 90% correct with selections (not in hindsight), more often than not spot on with bowling changes and the batting order.
You have to be able to know when to not fall for the match-ups, do something crazy with fielding settings (which you know after playing years of cricket), etc. etc. - to be brilliant.

A normal cricket watcher can't spot them easily.
We all call many captains brilliant because the level is so low.

Do you call every batsman/bowler brilliant? No. Because the level is very high.
I think a captain can get better by watching more cricket, reading on cricket and listening to the views of people who understand cricket.

Spend more time with analysts, coaches etc.

(But then they are very busy as well)

And, experience, of course.
This thread might not make sense but it is what I feel.
