Hey if you’re defaulting to creating a new community on slack in 2020, I, a person who makes their living doing community consulting, will give you an entirely free consultation to weigh up the pros and cons and possibly find a better option for what you’re after
Please let me help you stop using a screwdriver to open your tinned goods
I’m not going to lie to you, when it comes to community platforms, it’s bad. It’s all trade offs. Everything is terrible in one way or another.
But I have to be extremely generous to concede a pro to Slack that isn’t just “my target audience uses slack for work already”

And that’s fine, that’s actually ok for slack, because it’s not even a game they are playing! They are not building a community platform! They have no interest in doing that! So why do we keep pretending that’s what it is?? There are purpose built tools for this, I promise you!
One pro for slack is slightly hyperbolic, in that it’s really speaking about more open communities, there are use cases for slack for gated communities on the small side with very direct links to revenue. Carry on if that’s you.
I am entirely serious about this, please DM me or email me at joe at @interhacktiveco if you want to chat about why you probably don’t need slack
