My father, a veteran of World War II, made sure we never missed our town's #VeteransDay parade. Even as a kid, I was moved to see older men marching with a limp. Honoring them was not only about valor and victory; it meant recognizing that they carried a burden for my freedom.
As we mark the opening of the National Native American Veterans Memorial at our @SmithsonianNMAI, we recognize the sacrifice of those who served recently and long ago. The memorial asks us to consider what service means in our own lives. #NNAVM https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/secretary-lonnie-bunch-new-memorial-native-american-veterans-180976042
