There’s some rewriting of history going on by journalists, comparing Trump to ‘remoaners’. Firstly, I don’t remember ANYONE alleging there were any votes cast fraudulently in that referendum. I for one accepted that there more leave votes cast than remain. 1.
Quite literally, no one on the remain side made any allegations that Vote Leave had organised fraud at the ballot box, dead people voting etc. I don’t remember any of that, do you? 2.
The only thing most of us were upset about was
a/ how many gullible people there were and how many had voted for something which to us was so obviously stupid
b/ how nasty and childish they were in their victory
c/ and how the result was treated as unanimous 3.
In fact, most of us went back to our lives shell shocked and gutted, especially as we noticed how the referendum opened up a Pandora’s box of racism and vile behaviour 4.
I knew the result was procured by lies and a false prospectus but for the first year, I hoped something would happen. Surely we wouldn’t destroy our economy to protect the careers of prominent Tories, surely? 5.
I didn’t come onto twitter until April 2017 to rage about brexit, i found some of you here already but we were small in number. None of us talked about any illegalities around the campaigns because we didn’t know then. So comparing us to Trump is utter bollocks. 6
We definitely DID talk about how a non legally binding referendum BEFORE the vote magically became set in stone AFTER the vote, seemingly because of a sentence in a leaflet. But that was an appalling sleight of hand. But again, this was sometime after the result 7
So it’s not the same. Every vote cast by voters in that referendum was a legitimate vote, and we never, ever said otherwise 8
