Omg I just realized I haven’t posted my animal facts in a long time. So here it goes...*ahem*... Hyenas are more closely related to cats despite their dog-like appearance.
Hyenas have their own individual “whoop.” It’s a call that identifies themselves and is unique to each hyena. It’s how members of the same clan recognize each other over a distance
Kind of like how if we were to shout from a distance to get our friend’s attention like “AYYY YOOOO” 😂😂
Okay so the famous hyena laugh isn’t a laugh at all. It’s a sign of high stress. They make this sound during hunting, feeding, when there’s competition, when they’re frustrated, hungry, etc. They usually make this sound a lot when they’re around their enemies: lions
P.S. only spotted hyenas make the “laugh” other types of hyenas don’t. That’s why they’re known as “laughing hyenas”
Also, hyenas (imo) are highly underestimated! They are very intelligent animals and are super dangerous!!!! Their bite force is 1100 psi (pounds per square inch) which is greater than a lions or tigers!!! Their jaws are so strong. If you were to ever get bit by one, it’s over 💀
Ever notice how their body looks disproportionate? The long neck and short back legs? Their neck allows them to carry large chunks of food for long distances. Their neck is very strong and the muscles help brace themselves when they take down and drag large prey. The short hind..
legs and longer front legs aren’t built for speed, but rather built for endurance. They can stalk and chase their prey until it gets exhausted and then...well you know the rest
Y’all remember how Whoopi Goldberg voiced Shenzi from Lion King? It may be a coincidence but having a female as the leader is accurate. Spotted hyenas live in a matriarchal society. The clans are led by an alpha female. The females are bigger and more aggressive.
Oh and adult males rank last on the power structure in the clan 🤷🏾‍♀️
